BMW Sequential Manual Gearbox

null

An automatic transmission is the best thing to have sitting in traffic anywhere. Sometimes when I drive in traffice with my manual gearbox, I get really irritated. My left foot hurts and I cringe thinking about all the wear I'm doing on my expensive 3-puck clutch.

BMW came up with the idea of integrating the fast shifting response of a manual with the ease of an automatic transmission. BMW produced the SMG transmission for the E46 M3. This transmission is really a manual transmission gear box, but is electro-hydraulically controlled. Shifts happen in less than 65 mS. It might not be as fast as F1, but to any non-professional it is fast enough. The paddle shifting toggles from whatever gear is selected sequentially. Though it is not a true Sequential transmission that is actuated manually like in rallly cars, the shifting is plenty fast for all the wannabe racers out there.

BMW has made this standard equipment on the new generation M5 series, which is coupled to a powerful V10 motor.
