The Small and Mighty and Usually Overlooked CA18DET
The Mighty and seriously underestimated CA18DET
This 1.8L CA series engine which boasts 175hp and 169 ft lbs. of torque was introduced in many different overseas vehicles from Nissan (The S12, 180sx S13, Bluebird, 200sx (European/Australian)). With a brand new, in 1987, Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) aluminum head and 16 valves mated to an iron block with a bore of 83mm and a stroke of 83.6mm this mighty mouse could easily rev up to 7,200 RPMs. These robust little engines came equipped with a Garrett T25 (.48 A/R) and an intercooler.
Two variant heads are available, a High Port head and a Low Port head. The High Port is more desirable due to the better high RPM flow.
For those of you looking to swap an SR20DET into a 240sx or any other car for that matter (perhaps an e30 BMW hmmmm....) I suggest seriously thinking about the CA18DET. It is a low cost viable option for many enthusiasts. It also is belt driven, making it easier to replace (rather than chain driven which doesn't need to be replaced often, but can be a headache to do.)
Well hope you guys enjoyed this little tidbit of information on a great, relatively unknown, engine!
