One great place to learn about strut bars is

Dr. Gustave Goes is a Mechanical/Physics Engineer at UCLA, which means he really knows his stuff. He states that strut bars probably work in compression and tension of the strut bars.

He states that compression in the bar could be from going in a straight line, and that the car whill sag into itself naturally. The tension forces can be from taking a corner resulting in the stryt towers moving away from each other in time.
