WANT A POLICE CHASE? UH, NO YOU DON'T.

Sometimes you think you're just a complete baddass with your Honda Civic Turbo eg huh? A Dodge Viper can kiss your hairy arse maybe huh? Forget that. If you were living in Italy, the Italian Polizia Stradale would catch up to your cocky ass in this Lamborghini Gallardo in seconds.

8 highly qualified officers are allowed to drive this baby. First you have to part of the polizia force, do one full year of traffic duty training, and the best part: a one-week course with the baby blue Gallardo at the Vallelunga race circuit with Lamborghini's chief test driver Giorgio Sanna!

Now for those who put tons and tons of money into their vehicles and not professionally race, I have to ask, "Why, What's the point?" Simply enough, the pigs will get ya.

"Ford Acronyms"

"Built Ford Tough!!"
So a few days ago Mr. Philthy and myself were driving around in my 9000 horsepower FORD WINDSTAR. I drive the model with the bigger displacement, by the way. As we drove towards the sunset I spot a truck with a Glamis sticker on it. This truck happens to be a Ford Whatever. That's right a Ford Whatever!! I suddenly spurt out an acronym for Ford. Than Mr. Philthy spurts one out that he just made up on the spot. So I bust out my ace in the hole. The only Ford acronym that I can truly say is mine. Why? Because I made it up, and Fords are awesome and are reliable, and are built Ford tough. Anyways I scowered the intraweb and shmoozed with some buddies to bring ya'll this compiled(yet unfinished) list of Ford acronyms for you enjoyment...

The Bathroom

A while ago, The Johnster, Mister Philthy, and your's truly, Rack of Lam decided to take a semi-impromptu road trip up to Northern California to pick up a car and for a good time in the Bay Area. Halfway through our trip, we encountered the most day-ruining thing possible in this world: a problem with the car. There we were, stranded in the who-knows-where pits of California, and unable to call AAA for help because there were no signs around. To worsen matters, we were in the narrow roads of Mid-California so with one swerve of a car on the oncoming traffic, we were doomed. So, luckily the police found us and called AAA and we got dropped off at Los Banos, CA (yes ladies and gentlemen, "The Bathroom"). Since that was one of the worst times of my life (due to details I will not go into), I thought it'd be very helpful if I, Rack of Lam, provided for you the reader a list of things to inspect in your cars before taking a road trip so you can avoid getting lost in the bathrooms of wherever you're at. Use it as a checklist for convenience.

1: Oil - Black and jelly texture is no good. Remember that.
2. Transmission fluid - Chunky, metal shreds are no good.
3. Battery - Use a voltmeter to test the battery. If there is corrosion build up around the battery, a little Coke and scrubbing will take care of it.)
4. Air Filter - Black or brown air filter is no good. Get it checked out.
5. Proper amount of water in radiator - Unscrew radiator cap (with extreme caution!) and check for water. If there is some, good. If not, then fill 'er up.
6. Lights - Make sure all your lights work. That includes the headlights, taillights, brake lights, brights, turn signals, and brights.
7. Tires - Take a penny, put it into the tread of the tire w/ Abe's head pointing down. If the tread comes up to his head, then you're good. Anything less, then there's been some good wear on your tires.
8. Toolbox - Complete and in working order, please.

Hopefully on your next road trip, you can go through this list and you will not end up in Los Banos, CA. Trust me, it's like the twilight zone.

Shhh!! It's Coming....!

All I know for sure is, it will not be an Infiniti... It will be a Nissan...

2009 Nissan Skyline GTR

What is rumored...

Up to a 3.8L V-6 Twin Turbo with up to 450 hp

Rear-biased All-Wheel drive system

Will maybe only come in a 7 speed paddle shifter style design (but I hope not)

Spring of 2008...

Get ready to save you cabbage guys because this one could be as expensive as $70-$80k.
(Though I have heard rumors of being around $50k, in that case I don't have to take a second mortgage)

High Performance Headers - Hytech Headers

For those that are serious about racing cars and custom applications people rely on John from Hytech Exhaust. He makes a custom exhuast for pro racers for Toyota Formula Atlantic and NASCAR. I guess it must be nice to be spec'd in Formula Altantic making 200 headers a season at $1500 a pop.

These headers are designed with the patented Anti-Reversion stepped design patent number 6,336,471. The secondary waves that are emitted by the header are designed to pull the residual gases out of the exhuast system. Think about the Helmholtz Theory. In essence this header design incorporated design features to make you more power.

So if you need a custom application for any car you should go to Hytech. Stephan Papadakis did years ago and now he runs 1/4 miles in 7 Seconds. Impressive

AAA : American Automobile Association

Listen up! I have been debating to myself whether or not to join this club for some time and decided why don't I do some research and see what this club has to offer. Let's take a look at some of the perks about joinging AAA...

- 24-HOUR ROAD ASSISTANCE: Ok so you are coming home from San Francisco and your car dies on you in a city you are not too familiar with and you have no idea where or how you are getting back home? Easy. All you gotta do is call 1-800-400-4AAA (1-800-400-4222). They'll take care of you.

- DMV VEHICLE REGISTRATION SERVICES: Hate going to the DMV because it is packed with non-english speaking people? ME TOO! Despise DMV employees because all they do is give you attitude and make you have to make multiple visits back to the DMV because you forgot something? ME TOO. At AAA, many counties also accept online payments for traffic citations so forget going to the DMV and dealing with that nonsense. Primarily everything can be done online. Here are some other services you do online at AAA-Calif.com:

"Witticism & Salvation"

In 1999 Toyota released a series of small subcompact cars which included the Toyota Vitz, Toyota Yaris, and Toyota Echo. The name Vitz came from German word witz, which means "wit," "witticism," or "gag" in English. The name Yaris combines the German expression "ja," which is similar in meaning to "yes," with Charis, a Greek goddess who symbolized beauty and elegance.

Yeah...I thought that was a nice tidbit of trivia for all your young minds to gobble up. And here's another nice piece of trivia; the word Sotiris is a male given name of Greek origin and means "salvation". Sotiris is the name of the individual who designed the Toyota Yaris. Sotiris Kovos is also responsible for designing two other cars for Toyota, one is the SC300 and the most recent; the SC430.

Sotiris Kovos was the chief exterior designer of the SC430 during its conception working along fellow designer Satoru Kuno who was the chief interior designer. Kovos drew inspriration for the exterior of the SC430 in the French Riviera. He wanted the SC430 to represent high-end luxury and the lifestyle it entails. Apparently the final design is supposed to represent the luxury boats that traverse the waters of the French Riviera, from the retractable aluminum hardtop to the "uncluttered sides". I have no idea what "uncluttered sides" means.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!!!!! with an apology...

Hey guys, I know I haven't been around much the last month or so but I've been busy... Sorry again to those that actually read my stuff...

IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN! (at least I hope not)

Another Know Your Rights!!! For my California guys out there... Because we get screwed the most...

Lowering your car is not a crime!!! Unless you're crazy... If you lower your car LOWER than the LOWEST point of your car RIM then it is illegal otherwise it is FAIR GAME!!! (California VC 24008)

Air Hydraulics and Suspensions are also not illegal!!! But due to some ambiguous B.S. it is loosely worded as "Unsafely Driven" or lowered beyond the legal point... pretty much, Don't Hop in front of COPS! (California VC 24002, 24008)

Tint is ONLY okay in the rear seats!!! Not in the FRONT!!! Period!!! That is the law! I don't care what you do personally but just know that they really can bust you for that B.S.! (California VC 26708)

Blue and Yellow headlights are ILLEGAL! Damn everything is illegal in California!!! Only White is legal!!! But I don't know if you can call Halogen lights white, seems kind of dirty piss yellow to me too.... (California VC 24011)

Once again another ambiguous law...
In general, custom tail lights that incorporate a clear outer shell with a red inner lens are legal (California VC 24011)

You can have those fancy windshield nozzle lights (You know those things that give 10 hp when installed correctly) if they are white or yellow (California VC 25106, 24003) Now you can look cool and get more horsepower!!!

I'll get some more later... I'm tired... I need a sandwich...

Full value

Over my last few post on this blog, I've focused on pretty much getting the full value of your car, whether it be in the buying process or the up-keeping. Why? 'Cause it's my blog posts and I want to...and I care. More so the latter :) I care because I am a consumer like you all and my goal in any purchase is to be the smartest consumer as possible. On this post, I wanted to focus on another important factor in buying a car and that's the resale value of the car.

In the short term effect when buying a car, you bargain and bargain hoping to walk out of the deal with as little damage to your wallet as possible. However, this doesn't really make a difference if down the line the car does not retain much of its value. Mind you, this is for people that are buying their car. Those that lease are mainly looking for the residual value. Just to let you know a little about me, Rack of Lam...when something is uncertain to me, I have an "itch" to research on the topic. This is what I came up with; a list of some cars that hold their value the best (these stats are mostly from a time period of 3 years after the cars release year).

1. Toyota Prius

We've heard of all the perks that come with the Prius. Insane gas mileage, solo carpool driving (with HOV stickers), etc. It's no wonder this car can retain about 90% value of the original MSRP during a 3 year period.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

2. Porsche 911

The German engineered legend is probably one of the greatest exotic sports car to roam the roads. Because of its design and performance, the demand for it will always be there...and also, it's more easily maintained then its peers. The Porsche 911 is known to retain about 75% of its resale value.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

3. Infiniti G35 coupe

There's probably not too many cars that appeals to such a wider audience then the Infiniti G35 coupe. It's the vehicle perfectly balanced between sophistication and performance, which appeals to the young speed demon or even the well-mannered businessman. It figures that this car retains about 94% of its original MSRP value during the resale.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

4. Mini Cooper

Don't listen when people say this is a chick's car 'cause this car has been the "sophisticated-yet-adventurous man's" vehicle for decades, even with the BMW revamp of the Austin Minis. Since it's such a versatile car that appeals to such a wide audience, you better believe that there's a high demand for it. How high? It holds about 98% of its value!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

5. BMW 5-Series

Who'da thought? I certainly didn't. BMWs usually aren't known to retain their value well but after the 2002 model came out, the 5-series has been somewhat of of the standard for the mid-sized sports sedan class. Because of this, it cane hold up to 80% of its value.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Hopefully now, you can start to consider more about the long term plans of your cars when purchasing them. This is often something that is overlooked by the automotive consumer. This list of cars will give you a head start hopefully.

"Keiichi Tsuchiya"

Keiichi Tsuchiya, this amazing man first graced the planet on his birth: January 30, 1956 in Nagano, Japan. I don't need to explain who this man is. He is known as the Dorikin aka "Drift King" for his nontraditional use of drifting in non-drifting racing events, and his role in popularizing drifting as a motorsport. He's also known for touge driving. which is basically drifting on mountain roads ( you know it's that thing you kids do right before you grab a crepe and some boba at 'Life Plaza' ). The car that he uses to drive has become one of the most popular sports cars these days, the Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno.

Keiichi Tsuchiya started his career through amateur racing in the Fuji Freshman series, in 1977. He was one of a few if not, one of the only racers in his time to come from a non-racing/non-wealthy family background. Through underground street racing Tsuchiya honed his driving skills and became somewhat of a legend in his youth. Many other events came and went after the Fuji Freshman as well as many different cars. Some of the cars that have had the pleasure of being driven by the Drift King are the Lark McLaren F1 GTR, the Taisan Nissan Skyline GT-R, the BMW M30, and a car the some of the members of thetunersource.com would appreciate; the Ford Sierra Cosworth.

Also, might I add that he's made many appearances in drift-based movies/shows/dvds. Examples of Keiichi Tsuchiya's cameos include the ever-popular 'Drift Bible' dvd, episode 23 of Initial D and as the fisherman in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift. He's supposedly been retired from racing since 2003, and currently owns a new suspension company called DG5 which he started in 2006 after Kei Office was bought by another company.

At LEASE you're PURCHASING ...

Okay, so you want to buy a new car. You go to the dealership, know the car you want, but the only thing to consider now is how you're going to pay for it. Usually these two options are known as "leasing" and "financing" a vehicle. I've always wondered what the better option was but it turns out to be situational and based upon individual needs. So, I thought I'd provide for you some of the pros and cons of leasing versus financing a car so that you can make the decision that is best for you the next time you go to the dealership.

LEASING

Pros:
- Get a better car for lower monthly payments.
- Leasing means that you only pay the worth of the car during the period of the lease. Financing a car means that you're paying 100% of the car for a given time. Therefore, the monthly payments on a lease option are always less expensive.
- Since the car is not really ever your's, you "rent" the car for a couple of years then return it for a brand new car. Weeeeee!
- Example: Monthly payments on a 36 month lease for a $40K car is about $400/month. Compare that to the $900ish/month payments on a 36 month finance.
- The manufacturer warranty coverage ensures that you don't pay maintenance costs or parts replacements because, again, the car is not really your's. Also, you'll usually end up returning the car after the lease before any major problems arise.

Cons:
- You don't get any money back. Technically, you'll be pouring thousands and thousands of dollars in payments and upkeeping for something that never becomes your's. It's like you're renting the car.
- The only thing you have to show for the money you put in your car are the memories...once the lease is over.
- Also, there is a trend for higher insurance with leased vehicles.
- With your leased car, you also need to have a compulsive monitoring of your car. Any damages to the car will accrue fees once the car is returned. Also, racking up the mileage on your cars above the quota will accrue fees as well.

FINANCING

Pros:
- When you finance, you get the freedom to do what you wish with your car. Once you drive it off the lot, you don't have any binds to the dealer except for paying your monthly dues on time.
- When the car is all paid off for, you get the option to sell your car and you pocket all the money you make from it.
- Even though you're paying more each month, you're making payments into something with an end. Again, you have freedom with your car because it is your own.

Cons:
- When you finance a car, you're overall forking up a lot of cash. The monthly payments are higher because you're paying for the full value of the car instead of set time of a lease. Also, if you wanted to lower your monthly payments, you'd have to fork up more cash to put a down payment on the car.
-A purchased car has a higher sales tax.
- Though in the long term purchasing a car is an asset, it is one that depreciates in its value. As the saying goes, your car loses its full value the second it's driven off the lot.

Buying a car takes a lot of options weighing. If you're a lower-income person, leasing a car would be your best option. Also, people who don't stack on mileage and don't intend on upgrading their car may see leasing as the better option as well. The vice versa applies for someone who wants to finance. Either way, do your homework and hopefully you'll be driving off the lot with a smile on your face. Happy shopping.

The Importance of Out-Sourcing Parts : Exotic Car Designers Making Their Lives Easier

Imagine designing and building a car. Even if you could draw the car on paper you would have to build a full size clay mold and then take that mold to make other molds to stamp steel or lay down carbon fiber. Its a tedious task and requires precision and artistic ability.

Exotic car companies are not heavily staffed like Toyota, BMW, or Dodge. So these companies have to rely on inventive ways of integrating components from other cars into their own vehicles. Designing a car could be "fun" but I'm sure the fun stops when you have to design a plastic inner fender well or a dome light.

Here are a few examples of Exotic Car Designs that use pieces of "ordinary" cars to help make Exotic Car Manufacturers lives easier.

The Lotus Esprit a great British Super Car using 1985 Toyota Corolla (AE86)Tail lights? WTF?

The beautiful Lamborghini Diablo using Nissan 300ZX Headlights, this is madness!

NO not the Mclaren F1 the most awesome car on the planet! Tis true, it shares the same block and engine components as the BMW 850 with the S70 motor.

So think twice when you like something that you see on that exotic car.

"Skin A Scion Contest"

So this is a no brainer; deviantART and Scion have team up for a contest. The rules are pretty easy. You have to be at least 18 years of age (or have written consent/approval from a parent or guardian). Basically, it's open to all ages. You also have to be a US resident to win the car.

deviantART/Scion have provided you the artist with six different six templates, with each template consisting of two separate images. The first five templates are templates of Scion's xA, xB, tC, as well as two new models that will come out in the US: the xB-NG, and the xD. The sixth template features the tC/xB in line art form (so for all of you graphic artist: there's no real need to vector any of the cars).

You are free to design whatever you want. You may choose to design on one or all the cars. The grand prize winner will recieve either a Scion xA, xB, tC, xB-NG or xD or a cash equivelant of the model chosen. And the best part is you may enter as many times as you like. The contest ends August 7, 2007 at 5:00PM Pacific Standard Time. Take note that this contest is going to be hard to win, you have plenty of worthy competition ahead of you...do not slack off!! Most importantly bring your 'A' game if you want to win. Good luck to you all. Below are images of some of your compatition and links to the competion.

NORWAY STAVANGER $5.07
NORWAY OSLO $4.93
ITALY ROME $4.86
TURKEY ISTANBUL $4.85
PORTUGAL LISBON $4.80
KOREA SEOUL $4.71
SWITZERLAND GENEVA $4.56
KOREA KOJE/OKPO $4.53

Venezuela with $0.14 good god man! What a steal!

Thats only because its subsidized! As you can see on the worldwide scale, gas prices are quite all over the board.
So I guess in a way we pay alot and in other ways were doing okay. Look on the bright side, we could be in Hong Kong and be paying over $5.00. On the downside all our cars would be HKDM haha!

You do know JACK!

I have a confession. A while ago, I got a flat tire and I forgot how to change it. Don't get me wrong, I've been driving for a long time and the last time I changed a flat tire was when I started driving so the problem never arose. You might be saying to yourself that changing a flat tire is like riding a bike because once you learn, you never forget. Well, I didn't want to make an uncertain attempt at changing the tire at the risk of ruining something. That, and I was also on my way to a place where I couldn't have my hands or clothes dirty :) So, I vowed that it would be my last time to call upon AAA for flat tire help. I went home, did my research, and I present to you a step-by-step process so you too will not have to rely on a greasy and musky smelling guy to change your tire. With a little strength and willingness to get dirty, you'll be on your way in no time.

1. Bring Jack

The jack is your best friend in a time of a flat tire crisis. Make sure your car has one in the trunk...and make sure it works. There's the tripod, scissor but I recommend a hydraulic jack just because it's faster and safer and also it's less expensive. If you're unsure about how to raise your car using the jack, here's a cheat sheet: use the owner's manual.

2. Lug Nuts

It's best to loosen the lug nuts on the tires before jacking up the car. It's something that many motorists forget to do. The reason for this is because once the car is jacked, the wheel turns freely and makes it hard to unscrew the lug nuts. Before attacking the lug nuts, you'll need to use a screwdriver or some wrench or tool with a flat head to pry off the hubcap or rim. This is where your muscles will come into because the lug nuts are screwed on using power tools.

3. Jack It Up

Now with the lug nuts loose, you can jack up your car. Find a spot under the car where it can rest securely on the jack. This is imperative. Raise the car with smooth up and down strokes until the tire is completely off the ground. Then completely remove the lugs.

4. Spare Yourself The Trouble

Have your spare ready and make sure there's sufficient air in it. Also, make sure you check your spare tire periodically in case it loses air or whatnot. Now, pull off the flat tire and make sure it clears the studs. Now pick up the spare tire and place it on the studs. Making sure the spare tire is in place, replace the lug nuts back on securely and then lower the car to the ground using the jack. Then once the tire is on the ground, tighten it some more using the lug wrench. You can then choose to put the hubcap or rim back on or ride the wheel naked. Put the flat in your trunk and you're on your way!

Hopefully, these tips will save you the time and trouble a flat tire can bring. If not, then it's a great way to get a date. For guys, there's nothing more attractive then helping a damsel in distress. For girls, same applies and also, asking for help might bring you handsome helper. If you're thinking I'm a chauvinist 'cause I didn't mention the guy asking for help, it's because guys' egos probably wouldn't allow them to ask for help ;)

Steve Millen : Possibly the Greatest Import Racer Influence?

Take a good look at this guy. No, really, take a good look at this man. He's not very attractive and probably doesn't smell good, due to him being from the land of sheeps, New Zealand. (FYI New Zealand has 5 to 1 ratio of sheep to people)

He started his legacy in 1969 and within 5 years he was able to win a championship for the South Pacific Saloon Car Championship. In 1990 he won the Rookie of the Year 24 Hours of Lemans.

In 1992 he joined the Z32 300ZX race team. Even though the 300ZX he drove was nothing like the street going Z32 300ZX that your aunt drives, it shared a fiberglass body that was slightly reminiscent, almost like a Fair Lady. 1992 He won the IMSA GTS Championship and won the 12 Hours of Sebring. 1994 was an impressive year for this sheep lover, he won 24 Hours of Lemans, 24 Hours of Daytona, and 12 Hours of Sebring. It should be noted that he did not allow his team mates to drive in these victories. Think about how crazy you would be driving 23 Hours straight. I'm sure he practiced the "Let It Flow" philosophy when it came to bath room breaks.

He is the all-time most winningest driver in IMSA history at 20 victories and 23 pole positions.

Steve Millen used his experience to create Stillen, originally a Z32 300ZX performance tuning house. He is considered as one of the top 300ZX tuners in the world, this was verified to me by watching OPTION VIDEO that featured 300ZX. Those crazy japs were gonzo over Steve Millen Products.

Now he has positioned himself as a 350Z Tuner and develops bullet-proof Suburbans for thrid party civilian protection.

"Yokohama Tires"

Here's another piece of knoledge for all you blog fans. Yokohama Tires or The Yokohama Rubber Company, Limited is a tire manufacturing company based in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The company was established around October of 1917 from a joint investment from Yokohama Cable Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (which is currenty Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd.) and BF Goodrich from the United States.

It was around 1937 when the company used "Yokohama" on their tires & industrial products. And not until 1963 when they changed their name to it's now current corporate name Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd.
The company came to the United States around 1969 as the Yokohama Tire Corporation. As of now the company has several plants located in countries such as Australia, Thailand & the Philippines producing products such as winshield sealants and hydraulic hoses. There ya'll go, some knowledge for your @$$. Learn something.
